Please keep an eye out for mussels (freshwater clams) living in Matteson Lake this summer. If you find one, take a picture of it (in your hand for scale) and send it to Larry Lemke at L.D.Lemke@cmich.edu so that he can get it identified. Mussels are great filter feeders and knowing whether we have living mussels and, if so, what species they are will help us evaluate the potential for reintroducing them into in Matteson Lake at some point in the future.

At the same time, if you find a shell from a non-living mussel, please save or photograph it too. Any information will be helpful. Thank you!

Several years ago, the Lake Association purchased Milfoil Weevils to control the lake’s Eurasion Milfoil invasion. These weevils provide an environmentally-safe alternative to herbicides. They’ve done a great job, but we need your help guarding the weevils! They are very small (.08 to .12 inch long), so most people don’t see them. Please be careful not to burn leaves near the shore, and to leave some vegetation at the shoreline for habitat.
